PLANNING YOUR CBT LABORATORY BUDGET:
Setting up a 30 to 50-computer examination laboratory does not require brand new ₦400,000 laptops. By pairing clean refurbished desktop computers or mini PCs with an efficient solar/inverter backup and offline CBT software, Nigerian schools can deploy a functional testing laboratory for a fraction of traditional estimates.
1. The 4 Core Hardware Pillars of a CBT Lab
Pillar 1: Student Candidate Computers (Client PCs)
Refurbished Core i3 or Core 2 Duo desktops/laptops with 2 GB to 4 GB RAM and 120 GB SSD are ideal. They run Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 reliably and cost significantly less than new hardware. Ensure optical mice and keyboards are responsive.
Pillar 2: Master Server Computer (Host PC)
One desktop designated for the examination officer with Core i5, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD. This PC hosts the question database, enforces exam session timers, and collects candidate responses.
Pillar 3: Local Network Gear (Switch or Router)
A 24-port or 48-port Fast Ethernet switch (for wired labs) or a 300 Mbps dual-band Wi-Fi access point. A standard router costs around ₦15,000–₦30,000 and requires zero internet connection.
Pillar 4: Reliable Inverter & Solar Power Backup
In Nigeria, power instability (NEPA/DISCO outages) during an exam causes chaos. A 3.5 kVA or 5 kVA pure sine wave inverter system with lithium or tubular batteries powers 30 client PCs for 4–6 hours continuously, ensuring zero disruption.
2. Lab Sizing Checklist (30-Seat Lab Example)
| Equipment Item | Recommended Specification | Quantity | Estimated Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candidate Desktops / Laptops | Core i3, 4GB RAM, Win 10/11 | 30 units | Mandatory |
| Host / Teacher PC | Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD | 1 unit | Mandatory |
| Network Switch / Router | Cat6 Cables + 100Mbps/Gigabit Switch | 1 - 2 units | Mandatory |
| Inverter & Battery System | 3.5kVA or 5kVA with 2-4 Batteries | 1 system | Essential for Nigeria |
| Offline CBT Software | Elite CBT Exam Suite | School License | Mandatory |
